The Open Gate

In 1987 the Caucus established a private charitable foundation, The Open Gate, a Fund for Gay and Lesbian Life at Harvard University. The Open Gate has tax exempt status and all contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

The generosity of Caucus members has enabled The Open Gate to fund a variety of activities and events. Among the most noteworthy have been:

• The HGLC Public Service Fellowship - application deadline for the 2005 Fellowship is March 28, 2005.
• Conferences on Queer Politics and Queer Science in April, 1997;
• The undergraduate BGLTSA (Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, Transgendered and Supporters Association) Resource Center, inaugurated in May, 1996;
• A 1994 Stonewall Anniversary conference at the Law School on current bisexual, gay and lesbian legal issues;
• A 1993 Medical School symposium on the biological basis of sexual orientation;
• Sponsorship of a 1992 gay and lesbian film festival run by College undergraduates;
• A 1991 exhibit of lesbian artists in Agassiz House at Radcliffe; and
• The national Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Studies Conference in 1990, attended by over 1,500 people.

The Open Gate also provides funding for a wide variety of efforts at Harvard by GLBT student organizations and the Caucus, including student research on GLBT issues. Possible future projects include a center or administrative office, and a visiting professorship or GLBT studies program. The Open Gate offers a brochure explaining How to Apply for Grants.
