Open Gate Foundation:
How to Apply for Grants
PURPOSES OF THE OPEN GATE
The OPEN GATE was formed in 1986 to fund activities at Harvard University
to benefit gay and lesbian students, faculty, staff, and alumni:
-
to support and encourage scholarship, research and related educational
activities in the field of sexual orientation, including the funding of
research projects and conferences
-
to encourage and support student, faculty and employee groups which further
a climate of open discussion on issues related to sexual orientation
-
to recognize distinguished contribution in the field of sexual orientation
through awards, memorials, cultural events, and related activities
TYPICAL PAST GRANTS
$100 to $1,000:
-
Support for operating expenses of student organizations and for special
projects
-
Support for publications, such as HQ, Diversity and Distinction,
The
Gay & Lesbian Review, and The Harvard Gay and Lesbian
Newsletter
-
Support for research expenses for relevant student projects
-
Speakers on scholarly and literary subjects
-
Performances of works by gay and lesbian artists
-
Publication of informational brochures
-
Support of Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
$1,000 to $3,000:
-
Support for conferences on legal, political, medical, and cultural subjects
-
Support of HBS Audio-text system
-
Educational video for Harvard AIDS Support Group at the UHS
Over $3,000:
-
Support of 1990 Lesbian and Gay Studies Conference at Harvard
-
Startup and operating funding for the undergraduate BGLTSA Resource
Center
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Applications should be in the form of a short letter, addressed to Prof.
Warren Goldfarb, President, The Open Gate, Emerson Hall, Harvard University,
Cambridge MA 02138. Letters should provide the following information:

Name, address, telephone and (if possible) e-mail address of group or individual
applying

Contact person
-
Description of activities to be funded
-
Statement of how the proposed activity advances the purposes of the Open
Gate
-
Budget of income and expenses
-
Amount of funding requested from the Open Gate and the amount expected
to be raised by other means
-
Date funds are needed
-
To whom the check should be made out and the address to which it should
be sent
If possible, please submit your application letter by e-mail to
[email protected], and mail one paper copy as a backup to:

Alternatively, you may mail one paper copy of your
letter to Professor Goldfarb and also mail six (6) paper copies

If you submit paper copies, please use a readily scannable font such
as Courier.
Applicants should allow approximately one month for
review and approval of applications, which are reviewed by a far-flung
committee of alumni. In an emergency, small grants can receive expedited
approval.
