Caucus Incorporates; Elects Board

by Robert Mack

Harvard Gay & Lesbian Caucus, Inc. was incorporated on July 3, 1997, as a Massachusetts not-for-profit corporation.  Copies of its by-laws and articles of organization are available on our web pages, or by mail at our cost on request of any member.   The Board of Directors of the Caucus was elected by ballots mailed to 631 eligible voters; 121 ballots were returned by the (extended) deadline. We had a problem this year with bulk mail delivery - the ballots were given to our mailer on May 1 but some were not delivered until over a month later!  Ten candidates were elected.  Five were chosen by lot to serve for a one-year term and five for a two-year term:

For a one-year term:
Sarah L. Duncan; A.B. '84, Computer Systems Manager in the Biochemistry Department, Master's student at the Divinity School; Belmont, MA
Kevin Jennings; A.B. '85; New York, NY
George C. Richwine; A.L.M. '97; Boston, MA
Richard Schneider, Jr.; Ph.D. '81, Editor and founder of The Harvard Gay & Lesbian Review; Boston, MA
Stephen K. Urice; M.T.S. '75, A.M. '77, Ph.D. Fine Arts '81, J.D.'84; Philadelphia, PA

For a two-year term:
Warren Goldfarb; A.B. '69, Ph.D. '75, Professor of Philosophy; Cambridge, MA
Rev. Carol A. Johnson; MDIV III, HAI ; Boston, MA
Thomas Kelly; A.B. '86; Washington, DC
Robert W. Mack; A.B. '71, JD '74; Cambridge, MA
Hugh Russell; A.B. '64, M.Arch. 67; Cambridge, MA

The Board met for the first time on July 7, and again on September 15, with all members participating either in person or by telephone. Officers were unanimously elected as follows: Co-Chair/President - Bob Mack; Co-Chair/Vice President - Kevin Jennings; Treasurer - Hugh Russell; Clerk - Warren Goldfarb. It was noted that the officers are four white male alumni, and there was a consensus that greater diversity in the Caucus leadership is desirable.

After discussion the Board agreed unanimously not to reopen the 1997 balloting for Board of Directors, at least unless 25 members so request. The Board approved a $27,000 budget for 1997-98, including $10,000 for the $15 of each $25 dues check which goes to the Review.  The budget roughly tracks last year's experience except it contemplates $3-4,000 cost and income for the Directory and it allows an additional $1,000 for contingencies.

Sarah Duncan, Warren Goldfarb and Richard Schneider formed a search committee for a new Co-Chair, to replace Bob Mack when he steps down at the end of December. The Board noted the enthusiastic launch of the Boston/Cambridge Chapter under Dave Sullivan's leadership and approved its stewardship of the speakers program.  Sarah Duncan and Colin Stewart will be the Caucus liaisons to the University-wide glb student group known as the Mothership.
